On May 23, Truthout profiled Co-opoly!
Our very own Brian Van Slyke sat down with Truthout’s Mark Karlin for an interview about Co-opoly: The Game of Cooperatives. We are excited and proud to be featured in such an excellent publication, and it is a great opportunity for us to spread the word about TESA, Co-opoly, and the co-op movement.
Here’s a snippet from the interview: “I’d also say that Co-opoly’s philosophy is antithetical to the values of…hedge fund billionaires and big bankers because everyone’s in it together. …Luckily, we don’t feel so bad alienating these billionaires – the world happens to comprise primarily non-billionaires. In fact, we’re currently on our second pressing of Co-opoly, as we sold out of the first pressing in under a year, so it is safe to say that many people feel the same way about the billionaires.”

Workplace Democracy: Equality Over Profit
We published an article on the challenges of workplace democracy in Truthout. The benefits of a democratic workplace are described more often than the challenges, so we set out to shine a light on the more difficult aspects of everyday democracy, from lacking funds to personality conflicts.
“Contrary to our national mythology, we practice democracy very infrequently. Almost every organization, institution, or site of human interaction is governed by hierarchical principles, founded on individualism, and driven by competition. Even many social justice organizations can mimic corporate structures and assume these traits,” writes worker-owner David Morgan in the op-ed.
Send Co-opoly to Schools
During the next two weeks, until June 6, for for every 15 games of Co-opoly purchased, we’ll send one free game to a different school. The first schools to receive games were the Innovation Academy in Tyngsboro, MA and the Martin Luther King School in Springfield, MA. Next up is the Youth Action Coalition in Amherst, MA. Is there a school you’d like to see Co-opoly go to? Let us know and spread the word about our efforts!
