Working with NYC to Create Education for New Americans

During the spring and summer of 2016, TESA worked with a the Center for Family Life (CFL), a Brooklyn based client, on a project to develop curriculum for the city of New York’s Small Business Services program (SBS). The main focus of the project was to develop new, interactive curriculum for the New Americans Workforce1 Training Program and the launch of its new center in Washington Heights. The program also aimed to provide engaging and culturally appropriate curriculum for new (or existing) Americans seeking employment in New York City.

The Collaboration

Working closely with CFL and the SBS, TESA developed interactive curriculum for four different workshops, a train-the-trainers initiative, and a program assessment rubric. TESA also worked closely with CFL and the instructors to insure that the curriculum was culturally sensitive, empowering, and participant centered. Furthermore, TESA was involved in the pilot of the workshops for Workforce1 customers, staff, and the NYC Department of Small Business Services.

The curriculum TESA designed with CFL was aimed at meeting program needs for communications tools based on intercultural relationships and working with diverse populations, as well as a train-the-trainers imitative for Workforce1 staff that incorporated engaging, discussion-based examples and a cultural competency training.

Testimonial

Mo Kantner, Candidate Services Program Manager for the NYC Department of Small Business Services had this to say about TESA’s work:

The Department of Small Business Services worked with TESA to provide content for a series of interactive workshops and trainings for a targeted segment of the population in New York City. [The TESA team was] very responsive to our questions and feedback, and flexible with our evolving needs. The final product was professional, engaging, and easy to understand. The feedback from these workshops has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants eager to continue discussing topics from these classes far beyond the allotted class time. We would recommend TESA to anyone looking to create innovative and stimulating training programs.

It was especially exciting to work with the City of New York to bring popular and democratic education into government services!
